Hanton City

Hanton City is sometimes called "Lost City" by the locals, it lays on Hanton City Trail in Smithfield Rhode Island. I had a few hours to kill so I ventured forth to the Ocean State to have a look. I took the old road, still partially paved, at the entrance was an old cemetery, so of course I had to check that out. There were 6 gravestones, all of Smiths.

I drove down the partially paved road, through rather large mud puddles watching the woods for signs of this ghost town. The directions I had weren't very specific and so I parked accordingly and walked up a path, down a path and across a path, no sign of any lost civilization. I decided to go ahead a way and see if I hadn't gone far enough. Sure enough that was it! I came upon another path fitting the description in my directions. Walked down the path and found a pleasant brook, some dirt bikers, but still no lost city.

I got back on the road and went further down, I noticed a long stone wall and stopped to poke around. I was almost in a well of some sort! Climbing down the hill I saw large boulders with stone walls built up around them, as well as a wall built around the well, interesting enough. I kept driving on and found an older gentleman in a truck reading a magazine, an odd site to find on an old abandoned road that hasn't seen pavement in years. I inquired about potential cellar holes in the area and he told me the entire area was private property and I wouldn't be able to walk around to look! I read that the property belongs to Dow Chemicals or Fidelity Investments, or both, so this might be true. I've also read that there is a potential for a quarry in the area. I was running out of time so I headed back on the highway, perhaps to venture this way again some other sunny day.
