Fort Getty, R.I.

The war department bought 31 acres, known as Fox Hill, in 1900 and constructed Fort Getty. It was named after Brevet Major General George W. Getty. Three batteries were built and the first garrison was established in 1909. It was temporarily occupied during WWI as an outpost of Ft. Greble, and put on caretaker status afterward. In 1940 a coastal artillery unit stayed in newly built barracks and a searchlight was also stationed at the fort.

An Army School Center was established to brainwash German prisoners of war in "democratic government". Over one thousand German POW's passed through the school, taking classes lasting 60 days, with the last class graduating in December of 1945.

In the 1970's the fort was turned over to the State of Rhode Island, most of the batteries were covered over and the site now hosts an RV campground. Many of the forts foundations can be seen poking up from the grass.
