Metropolitan State Hospital
Met State opened in October of 1930 and sits on 490 acres. In 1992 it closed its doors. Rumors
are that the property may be turned into a golf course, condos, or both.
Ground breaking took place in the cold month of December, 1927 in Waltham after Boston State
Hospital was unable to convince the State Board that their site should be enlarged. In 1945 it
was brought to the Governor and Council's attention that there were three children residing at
Met State and it was decided to build a children's hospital. In 1955 the Gaebler Children's
Center opened, named after William C. Gaebler. On the last day of January, 1992 the Geabler
Children's Center closed. For over ten years the hospital grounds have set abandoned, exept
for the guards . . and the occasional visitor.
Here are a few pics from an early trip to Met State, before the wrecking balls.
